Efflorescence is a term describing the deposition of salts, usually white in color, on the surface of a porous material like concrete or brick. It occurs when water containing dissolved salts migrates to the surface and then evaporates, leaving the salts behind. While aesthetically unappealing, efflorescence is not inherently a structural issue but can indicate moisture intrusion, which might lead to more serious problems.
