20+ exposed nails. One severe NWA storm. Countless potential leaks. ⛈️
When roofing crews rush to hit tight completion deadlines, precision drops. Low-nailing is one of the most frequent defects I catch, and it's a prime example of what happens when speed takes priority over craftsmanship.
Here’s what’s actually happening in this clip:
Low-Nail Shingles: Over 20 fasteners were shot below the nail line. Instead of being tucked safely beneath the overlapping shingle above, those metal heads are sitting right out in the open.
Unsealed Ridge Nails: Final face nails near the ridge caps were driven in and left completely unsealed.
The Math of a Roof Leak:
Every exposed nail head is a funnel. Water hits the exposed metal, runs down the shank, and penetrates straight into the roof decking. Over time, that means rusted fasteners, wind uplift, degraded insulation, and hidden mold growth in your attic.
Passing a basic municipal code check doesn't guarantee the crew followed manufacturer installation specs. Catching these details before closing (or before your 11-month builder warranty expires) is the only way to hold the builder accountable.
