Ever feel like brand-new construction looks crisp and smooth until you actually take a closer look?

Modern LED overhead lighting casts broad, soft light that flattens out surfaces. That means builder-grade lighting can easily hide serious wall imperfections, uneven framing, and joint issues that are sitting right in plain sight.

In this quick clip on a recent new construction inspection in Elkins, Arkansas, I show how a simple tool—a high-lumen flashlight—reveals what standard lighting hides:

Raking Light Technique: By turning off the overhead lights and running a flashlight beam parallel to the wall, low-angle raking light casts micro-shadows across the surface.

Hidden Drywall Defects: This technique immediately exposes underlying bow marks, seam ridges, over-sanded mud lines, and uneven drywall joints that look totally invisible under top-down LEDs.

Why It Matters for Buyers: Catching cosmetic and framing surface defects before final closing means getting the builder to repair them on their dime, not yours down the road.

Check out how dramatic the difference is when the lights go out! Flashlight angle matters more than you think.
